Electrical Powerline Technicians are trained to install, maintain, and repair the high-power transmission and distribution systems that deliver electricity from generation sources to homes and businesses. These professionals are vital in restoring power after major storms and hurricanes, and they work in both overhead and underground environments. Their responsibilities include:
- Installing or repairing powerlines on overhead structures (up to 300')
- Installing or repairing powerlines in underground vaults or trenches
- Climbing electrical towers and poles
- Assembling power substations and transformers
- Planning and initiating projects
- Establishing OSHA and customer safety requirements
- Maintaining and repairing overhead distribution or transmission lines
- Stringing new wire or maintaining old wire
- Installing and maintaining insulators
- Installing and maintaining traffic signals and outdoor lighting
- Tree trimming

This streamlined approach is ideal for individuals looking to quickly transition into a new field or advance their career in a short timeframe.
Valencia’s Electrical Powerline Technician program was developed in partnership with local utility companies to align with national certification standards and industry needs. The program follows the NCCER framework and includes hands-on training in pole yard and equipment lab settings. Students gain essential technical, safety, and interpersonal skills to prepare for entry-level positions in the utility field.

Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to earn:
- NCCER Power Industry Fundamentals
- NCCER Power Line Worker Level I
- NCCER Core Curriculum
- NCCER Site Safety
- Rigging/Signal Person
- Trench Safety Competent Person
- Confined Space Competent Person
- Fall Protection
- OSHA 10
- CPR/First Aid
- Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT)
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class A)
- May also be eligible for college credits toward an AS Degree in Construction/Civil Engineering Technology OR an AS Degree in Energy Management & Controls Technology OR an AS Degree in Supervision & Management for Industry
Enrollment Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age at the start of class
- Proof of high-school diploma/GED equivalent
- Read, write, and comprehend English
- Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination
- Must have a Negative DOT Drug test within 2 weeks of the start of class
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license
- Must possess a CDL-A learner's permit
- Provide a copy of your driving record (7 years)
- Have no more than 6 current points on your motor vehicle report
- Have no outstanding suspensions or tickets on your motor vehicle report for the prior 5 years
- Have no current drug or alcohol charges on your motor vehicle report
- Meet eligibility requirements for a commercial driver’s license: 7-year driving record
